Welcome to Diplomatic & Consular Yearbook Online

The publication was launched 34 years ago in 1974 — the year of Watergate and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. In the same year we also saw the deaths of such notable international figures as George Pompidou and Juan Perón plus the resignation of Golda Meir and Willy Brandt.

A great deal has altered in the international arena since the 1970s: power bases have changed; international trade has developed dramatically; ease of communication has made the globe a smaller place; and openness of government coupled with multicultural understanding has, despite the continuation of nationalism and fundamentalism in some regions, made the world a safer place in which to live.

At the heart of all these changes is the international diplomatic community. Whilst the scope and nature of Missions have also changed during this 30-year period, the topics of interest to the diplomat today are similar to those of yesterday. It is these aspects that are covered within the Diplomatic and Consular Yearbook Online, and I trust that you will find much of interest within the following pages.

“There's something that I have thought about for a lot of years — I believe that there is no position in government that requires a team approach more than that of the ambassador and his or her spouse” — US Ambassador Robert Holmes Tuttle at his swearing-in ceremony.
